My father & mother both fished Compton in the early 1960s. They were taken by car by cousin George & his wife Elsie. Having arrived about 5am - complete with stove and equipment for making tea and lots of sandwiches - they would settle down to fish.
Since I did not fish but liked Compton, my girlfriend (later my wife) & I would follow on later by motorbike and spend the day with them.
The then caretaker/bailiff often kindly showed us around the house and estate. He gave us news about the place - not good as I recall. The house was run down but still impressive. On one wall was a large magnolia, it was in flower so it must have been April time. We were both taken by the large pink waxy flowers.
Another time we were shown into a lean-to greenhouse on the side of a building which had a good crop of fruit and a large vine.
My father never slept away from his home ever - except when George, Elsie, Mum & Dad stayed overnight in George's little Standard 8 car to be good and early for Sunday fishing.
The photo was taken on 10 October 1962 from the road.
